Health insurance is complex and it can be confusing. Locally there are a number of resources available to assist residents and other consumers in assessing services and navigating the insurance market.
 
Agency and Website Provides Help With Phone Number
Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking
The government agency that regulates all financial service businesses in the District, including insurance companies and agents. The agency protects the interests of consumers from unfair and abusive practices. (202) 727-8000
Department of Health
The government agency responsible for promoting and protecting the health, safety and quality of life of residents, visitors and those doing business in the District.  (202) 671-5000
Medicare
Helps Medicare beneficiaries understand their Medicare coverage as well as signing up for prescription drug coverage. (800) 633-4227
Healthy Families (SCHIP)
DC Healthy Families provides free health insurance to uninsured children under age 19 and their parents/guardians. (202) 442-5988
Medical Assistance (Medicaid)
The state agency is responsible for administering the local Medicaid program, Title XIX of the Social Security Act, and other health care financing initiatives of the District. (202) 442-5988
Health Insurance Counseling
For District of Columbia residents with Medicare, or who are 60 years or older, information sessions are available to help understand Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurance  (202) 739-0668
DC Health Care Alliance
The government program provides residents easy access to a vast array of professional healthcare providers. (202) 442-5961
Income Maintenance Administration The government administration determines the eligibility of applicants and to recertify the eligibility of recipients for federal and District-funded assistance programs. (202) 698-3900
Prescription Drug Coverage Program The government program offers the DC Rx Prescription Drug Discount Card, which help can save money on prescription medications. The card is free and available to all District residents regardless of age, income or existing health insurance. (877) 321-2652
