What is the AccessRx Program?

The AccessRx program was introduced into law in March 2004 as the AccessRx Act of 2004. The act establishes a new and ambitious program within the Department of Health aimed at increasing access to medications for low-income, elderly and uninsured residents of the District of Columbia.
 
The legislation authorizes the District to negotiate lower pharmaceutical drug prices for:
  • Low-income senior citizens with a household income up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level—about $18,600 for individuals and $25,000 for couples, as estimated by the American Association of Retired People (AARP).
  • Uninsured residents with a household income not more than 350 percent of the federal poverty level—about $36,000 for individuals and $43,700 for couples or $66,000 for a family of four, according to AARP.
The program will be funded through a variety of cost containment measures including manufacturer rebates, pharmacy discounts and aggregate purchasing for other government pharmaceutical assistance programs. Select the links below for additional information:
